Blessed assurance
The “universal prayer” of the Catholic Church, the Liturgy of the Hours has been a meaningful source of community for me on my journey as a religious sister. Joining in prayer with the Christian community at consistent periods of the day unites me with others across the world whose prayer “rises up like incense before the Lord” (Psalm 121: 2). Knowing that others across the world are joining in this same prayer is a powerful gift, a true source of strength for enacting the “work of God” in mission.
As the light of this new day refracts through the clouds to shine through the oak trees lining the street and into our community living room this morning, it shines on the Bible and on the floral arrangement which brings the war-torn people of Ukraine into the center of our community. Our personal and communal prayer rises up in unity with all those in need of peace—with those across the oceans and with those “down the river” suffering from the devasting impacts of tornedos.
Prayed every morning at dawn in the Liturgy of the Hours, the tender words of Zechariahs’ Canticle touch my heart with blessed assurance and hope, “In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. (Luke 1.78-79)
