Calm in the Storm of Anger

In the environment of the numbing “breaking news” of shootings, crime and attacks, the issue of anger remains an inescapable concern of contemporary life. As a practitioner of mediation, my thoughts turn to the relationship between the genesis of anger and the expression of it: What do we do with our anger when it occurs? Let’s take a closer look. Anger is an inevitable dimension of human experience. None of us can circumvent the certain experience of anger with the inherent challenge to navigate its various gremlins and impulses. As an intense emotion, with anger, culture matters. Anger is [...]

Blessed assurance

The "universal prayer" of the Catholic Church, the Liturgy of the Hours has been a meaningful source of community for me on my journey as a religious sister. Joining in prayer with the Christian community at consistent periods of the day unites me with others across the world whose prayer "rises up like incense before the Lord" (Psalm 121: 2). As a contradiction, while exciting and stimulating, all of us who venture forth to explore unknown places know that traveling can be simply exhausting, making the return home usually favorably embraced. Welcomed or not, the persistent and insistent pandemic has [...]

Following her heart’s desire

With each passing year, I recall distinct moments in the colorful life of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, RSCJ that have meant something to me: the time she pulled the unwilling cow to cross the Mississippi River in the freezing weather; the times she did the essential, but small, hidden things of daily life in the community like mending clothes for children in the boarding school and polishing the furniture; and the many times she prayed all through the night. With the annual celebration of her feast day each year, I appropriate her story in new ways, and, in that way, [...]

The Spirit is building….

The excitement is building on the Mater Campus! Here is some exciting news about the development of our Master Plan at the Academy of the Sacred Heart. As many of you know, our school launched a forward-focused Strategic Plan in January 2017. As we implement our Plan, “Inspiring Faith Filled Women of Courage and Confidence,” we have been moving “full steam ahead” to transform learning spaces on the Rosary and Mater campuses. The good news: We have broken ground on another capital development initiative! This project, the Mater Campus Complex, will consist of three sub projects: the construction of a [...]
